A MESSAGE FROM RONNIE

Greetings, colleagues...

Just wanted to inform you all that I have accepted a teaching position in West Linn
at Rosemont Ridge Middle School--which feeds West Linn High School.
Last night, I had a meeting with Kevin Egan and I am excited to be working with
a passionate TEAM of educators. It's been rough advocating for myself these past
few years.

Thank you all for your kindness, your dedication, and your guidance over my last
four years here in Banks. Please stay in touch!

4-26-11 SPRING MEETING MINUTES

District III Spring Meeting Minutes
Izzy’s Pizza in Hillsboro
4-26-11

At 6:15 PM, President Craig Bader called the meeting to order.

Those in attendance were Russell Zaugg, John Coughlin, Linda Oram, Kathleen Serven, Michael McClure, Matt Pierce, Phil White, Jo Routh, Mike LaTorre, Rob Izzett, Noelle Freshner, John Hammond, Terry Dahlgren, Craig Bunch, Julie Louderback, Matt Durhkoop, Leonard Ostwalt, Davis Monroe, Larry Jackson, Craig Bader, Bob Lee and Jerilee Henderson.

The minutes were read and approved from the February 5th meeting in St. Helens.

John Hammond gave the Treasurer’s Report.  Contact Mike McClure (new treasurer) for more details.  John suggested that we should all plan ahead to have our checks in on time for Festival and Solo & Ensemble events.  Pay in advance.  Students that sign up to participate should be paid for whether or not they end up attending the day of the event.  He also suggested that District III not sponsor any “free” festivals next year but charge just enough money to break even.

OLD BUSINESS:
SCHOLAR MUSICIAN ACHIEVEMENT AWARD CERTIFICATES
John Coughlin will send out an email to ask all directors for a count of how many certificates they need this year for the Scholar Musician Achievement award.  These beautiful award certificates can be presented at the last concert of the year or at any award ceremonies sponsored by your school.  The criteria to receive a certificate are:  #1 ~ Musician must have at least a 3.5 GPA as of the last grading period and #2 ~ Musician must be enrolled in a music program at your school.  Julie Louderback volunteered to be in charge of the certificates next year due to John Coughlin’s retirement.

SPREAD IN FESTIVAL SCORES
The issue of scoring at Festivals was brought up.  Many directors would like Craig Bader to address this at the next State Board Meeting.   The main concern involves out of state adjudicators that haven’t received the certification training as our Oregon adjudicators.  It was suggested that District III sign a letter regarding this issue and present it to OSAA.  OBDA and ACDA would need to approve this action, though.  Craig will look into this.

MIDDLE SCHOOL HONOR CHOIR
Although Barry Berdahl wasn’t present at this meeting, a motion was made by Russell Zaugg and seconded by Matt Duhrkoop to hold a Middle School Honor Choir at Forest Grove in the Fall.  The motion passed.  This will be a new addition to our Events Calendar. A tentative date will be set tonight.

NEW BUSINESS:
MUSIC POSITION CHANGES
Craig asked for updates on music positions in our district.   Tillamook: John Coughlin will be retiring.  Bob Lee will be assigned to his open position and there will be no 4th – 5th grade music teacher next year.  Warrenton: John Hammond is retiring and teaching half time.  The Warrenton District will not be rehiring any General Music Teacher.  Rainier: Mike LaTorre is riffed for next year.  He had resumes for anyone to take and distribute to possible openings.  Banks:  Ron LaGrone’s position is cut to half time next year.  Forest Grove:  A definitive announcement had not been made by this meeting, but it’s speculated that FG will be cut from 12 to 5 music staff.  Orchestra may be gone.

STATE QUALIFYING STATISTICS
Matt Duhrkoop asked about the history of schools in District III that have qualified to participate in an OSAA sponsored event.  Craig Bader suggested that he research these statistics and give a report at our Fall meeting.

CREATION OF 2011-2012 DISTRICT III CALENDAR
Printed at the bottom of these minutes.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Terry Dahlgren took the floor as he announced the results of the officer nominations for the next 2 school years.  Our By-Laws read that voting should take place in May.  A motion was made by Terry Dahlgren to change our By-Laws to read that voting would take place in April.  Russell Zaugg seconded the motion.  The motion passed.  Elections are to take place every odd year.  Terry presented the nominated 2011-2013 slate of officers.  They are Craig Bader ~ President, Terry Dahlgren ~ Vice President, Jerilee Henderson ~ Secretary and Mike McClure ~ Treasurer.  John Hammond moved to accept the full slate of officers.  Matt Pierce made the second.  The motion passed.  Congratulations to our officers for the next 2 years!

CHAIRS
Jerilee Henderson nominated Linda Oram for Elementary Chair for 1 year.  Kathleen Serven seconded the motion.  The motion passed.   Matt Duhrkoop made a motion to allow Craig Bader research for a Choir Chair (Bob Emminger or Barry Berdahl).  Phil White seconded the motion.  The motion passed.  Craig Bunch will be our Band Chair next year.  Craig Bader will contact Jeff Johnson to see if he will be our Solo Chair for another year.

AWARDS
John Coughlin and John Hammond are retiring this year.  They were presented with a $50 Gift Certificate and a hardy THANK YOU for all their years of service to music education.
Linda Oram was awarded the Teacher of the Year for 2010-2011.  Congratulations, Linda!!

John Coughlin moved to adjourn the meeting.  The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Jerilee Henderson

FEBRUARY 5, 2011 MINUTES

District III Minutes
February 5, 2011
Honor Choir in St. Helens

The meeting was called to order by President Craig Bader.
Those present were Ron LaGrone, John Hammond, Craig Bader, Bob Emminger, Matt Pierce, Matt Duhrkoop, Jo Routh, Phil White, Kathleen Serven, Michael Simpson, Barry Berdahl and Jerilee Henderson.
MS HONOR CHOIR
The possibility of holding a Middle School Honor next school year was discussed.  The consensus was to have one next year, but to hold it early in the year around late October/early November.  It would be best to make it a one day event and hopefully Forest Grove High School can host us.  Barry will look into open dates for us.
SOLO & ENSEMBLE
Few directors have received solo & ensemble information.  Jeff Johnson is a new director and needs some help getting the word out.
DISTRICT III OFFICER POSITIONS OPEN
Next year is a voting year for new officers.  If anyone has the desire to hold a position on our District III Board, please step forward.  If you're going to nominate someone make sure to ask them first.
STATE MEETING NOTES
There will be no harp or guitar competition at the State level this year to help cut back on costs.

All-State and All-NW groups will be combined in Portland next year.
DISTRICT FESTIVAL FEES WAIVED
District III is again able to pay for each director in our district to attend one District sponsored Festival and the District will pay the registration fee this school year.
BEGINNING BAND TEST
On May 18th there will be a Beginning Band Fest held.  There will be no fee and each director will adjudicate.
