District III Spring Meeting Minutes
Izzy’s Pizza in Hillsboro
4-26-11
At 6:15 PM, President Craig Bader called the meeting to order.
Those in attendance were Russell Zaugg, John Coughlin, Linda Oram, Kathleen Serven, Michael McClure, Matt Pierce, Phil White, Jo Routh, Mike LaTorre, Rob Izzett, Noelle Freshner, John Hammond, Terry Dahlgren, Craig Bunch, Julie Louderback, Matt Durhkoop, Leonard Ostwalt, Davis Monroe, Larry Jackson, Craig Bader, Bob Lee and Jerilee Henderson.
The minutes were read and approved from the February 5th meeting in St. Helens.
John Hammond gave the Treasurer’s Report. Contact Mike McClure (new treasurer) for more details. John suggested that we should all plan ahead to have our checks in on time for Festival and Solo & Ensemble events. Pay in advance. Students that sign up to participate should be paid for whether or not they end up attending the day of the event. He also suggested that District III not sponsor any “free” festivals next year but charge just enough money to break even.
OLD BUSINESS:
SCHOLAR MUSICIAN ACHIEVEMENT AWARD CERTIFICATES
John Coughlin will send out an email to ask all directors for a count of how many certificates they need this year for the Scholar Musician Achievement award. These beautiful award certificates can be presented at the last concert of the year or at any award ceremonies sponsored by your school. The criteria to receive a certificate are: #1 ~ Musician must have at least a 3.5 GPA as of the last grading period and #2 ~ Musician must be enrolled in a music program at your school. Julie Louderback volunteered to be in charge of the certificates next year due to John Coughlin’s retirement.
SPREAD IN FESTIVAL SCORES
The issue of scoring at Festivals was brought up. Many directors would like Craig Bader to address this at the next State Board Meeting. The main concern involves out of state adjudicators that haven’t received the certification training as our Oregon adjudicators. It was suggested that District III sign a letter regarding this issue and present it to OSAA. OBDA and ACDA would need to approve this action, though. Craig will look into this.
MIDDLE SCHOOL HONOR CHOIR
Although Barry Berdahl wasn’t present at this meeting, a motion was made by Russell Zaugg and seconded by Matt Duhrkoop to hold a Middle School Honor Choir at Forest Grove in the Fall. The motion passed. This will be a new addition to our Events Calendar. A tentative date will be set tonight.
NEW BUSINESS:
MUSIC POSITION CHANGES
Craig asked for updates on music positions in our district. Tillamook: John Coughlin will be retiring. Bob Lee will be assigned to his open position and there will be no 4th – 5th grade music teacher next year. Warrenton: John Hammond is retiring and teaching half time. The Warrenton District will not be rehiring any General Music Teacher. Rainier: Mike LaTorre is riffed for next year. He had resumes for anyone to take and distribute to possible openings. Banks: Ron LaGrone’s position is cut to half time next year. Forest Grove: A definitive announcement had not been made by this meeting, but it’s speculated that FG will be cut from 12 to 5 music staff. Orchestra may be gone.
STATE QUALIFYING STATISTICS
Matt Duhrkoop asked about the history of schools in District III that have qualified to participate in an OSAA sponsored event. Craig Bader suggested that he research these statistics and give a report at our Fall meeting.
